Performance Improvement for Vehicles On Track, PIVOT

PIVOT project combines the development of activities in several key Rolling Stock sub-systems to contribute to the achievement of the key S2R Master Plan objectives (high reliability, high capacity, low cost and improved performance) within Innovation Programme 1. Five areas of intervention will be taken into consideration here: Carbody, Running Gear, Brakes, Doors and Modular Interiors.

This week, FIDAMC hosted the follow-up meeting of WP1 and WP2 (Carbody) of the project. These WPs aim to develop lighter carbodyshells which make full use of the possibilities of composite materials including integration of functions. This is linked to identifying the specific design principles, materials and manufacturing processes that fulfill the requirements set in previous activities, in terms of material properties, manufacturing cost and certification. The meeting was attended by representatives of: AERFITEC (Consortium formed by: Aernnova, FIDAMC and Tecnalia), Bombardier, CAF, SNCF, Talgo and Trafikverket.

Years of experience in the aeronautics sector allow us to transfer all acquired knowledge about composite materials to other industrial sectors, where weight reduction and protection of the environment are the important objectives to achieve. In the search of eco-friendly, innovative and low cost technologies, composite materials provide design engineers with superior quality and long life span. Higher strength, lower weight and less maintenance led to many engineering applications, especially in the transport sector where the reduced of energy consumption and impact to the environmental are key factor.
