Fidamc is one of the participants in the Herwingt project, a pioneering initiative that is redefining wing design for hybrid-electric aircraft. The Herwingt project not only seeks to improve the performance and efficiency of future aircraft, but also to transform the aeronautical manufacturing process, making it faster, cleaner and more sustainable.

Our role within the project focuses on robotic lamination of composite materials, an advanced technology that allows us to build complex wing structures with unprecedented precision and efficiency. Thanks to the in situ consolidation of thermoplastic materials, we can manufacture lightweight, strong parts adapted to curved geometries. This optimises material and energy consumption and reduces wear and tear in the process.

Safer and more sustainable hybrid-electric aircraft

As Carlos Aragón Carrera, R&D Project Manager at Fidamc, explains, "These technologies not only improve the quality and repeatability of the manufacturing process, but also contribute directly to the creation of safer, more sustainable and more accessible hybrid-electric aircraft". Isabel Martín, PhD Researcher, adds: "The combination of robotic lamination and in situ consolidation allows us to design complex shapes, such as the air boundary, in a faster, lighter and more automated way, which is an important advance for the aviation of the future."

Fidamc's work at Herwingt is a clear example of how technological innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand in the aerospace industry. Our robotic lamination system, equipped with custom-designed heating heads, makes a difference by enabling efficient and highly accurate wing manufacturing, helping to make hybrid-electric aircraft cleaner and less expensive to produce.
