3D printing

Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, is a revolutionary technology that has transformed the design and production of industrial components. Sectors such as the aerospace, biomedical and shipbuilding industries have adopted this technique to tackle key challenges, such as weight reduction, material optimisation and the improvement of parts’ structural performance.

At the CFA, managed by Fidamc, additive manufacturing is used to develop highly optimised components, capitalising on its many advantages. Unlike traditional methods, which require machining or subtractive processes, this technology allows parts to be created directly from a digital model, adding material layer by layer. This not only minimises material waste and reduces costs, but also enables the manufacture of structures with complex geometries that would be impossible to achieve using conventional technologies. These innovative shapes, which maximise strength and minimise weight, are particularly valuable in the aerospace and shipbuilding industries, where the materials used are expensive due to their demanding mechanical and thermal properties. In the biomedical field, this ability to manufacture parts with high precision is essential for developing customised prostheses and medical devices.

One of the main challenges in aerospace manufacturing is balancing structural performance with the need to reduce the weight of components. Additive manufacturing facilitates the production of lighter and stiffer structures, eliminating intermediate joints and improving the functionality of parts. As a result, lower fuel consumption and greater operational efficiency are achieved.

In addition to its design flexibility, another key advantage of additive manufacturing is its speed of response. By eliminating the need for jigs and moulds, this technology significantly reduces production times, making it an agile and efficient solution for prototyping and short-run production. Furthermore, as it is based on digital models, it enables the manufacture of fully customised parts tailored to each user’s specific requirements, ranging from bespoke industrial components to personalised medical solutions.

The CFA is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery for working with metals and polymers using the most advanced additive manufacturing technologies, enabling the production of everything from small components to large structures with significantly shorter development times than conventional methods, whilst offering bespoke solutions tailored to each client’s specific needs.
