The R&D&I and training centre for composite materials is thus promoting the diversification of its activity to work with other sectors beyond the aeronautical sector.
Madrid, 12 February 2025. Fidamc, an R&D&I and training centre dedicated to the research, development and application of innovative technologies in the design and manufacture of composite structures, has reached an agreement with Navantia, a leading company in the design, construction and maintenance of military vessels and in the maintenance and repair of civil vessels, to become a member of its board of trustees. The public company, which also works in the renewables sector, thus joins other leading companies and entities such as Airbus, CDTI, Hexcel, Talgo, Aciturri, Comunidad de Madrid, mTorres, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and Airbus Helicopters.
This strategic step reinforces Fidamc's commitment to diversifying its activities beyond the aeronautical sector, opening up new opportunities in sectors such as the naval sector, among others.
Composite materials, formed by combining two or more materials with complementary properties, stand out for their lightness, mechanical strength, durability and high resistance to corrosion. These qualities make them an ideal solution for the marine sector, where weight reduction in vessels improves energy efficiency, reduces carbon emissions and increases load capacity. In addition, their resistance to wear and tear in marine environments helps to reduce maintenance costs and extend the service life of vessels, positioning them as a key technology for the future of the industry.
Navantia's adhesion is in line with the promotion of its new COEX Advanced Manufacturing, the centre of excellence that will be dedicated, among other strategic lines, to the research and development of new materials and processes, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and being a milestone in the history of Fidamc. With this alliance, both entities intend to promote innovative projects in the field of composite materials, key to address the challenges of sustainability, efficiency and performance in the shipbuilding industry.
Ernesto González, CEO of Fidamc, highlights the importance of this incorporation:
"The arrival of Navantia to our Board of Trustees consolidates a new stage for Fidamc. This move reflects our ability to adapt to the needs of an ever-changing world, by committing to the application of composite materials in strategic sectors, such as the naval sector. We are convinced that this collaboration will be key to developing more sustainable and competitive technologies".
The incorporation of Navantia represents a significant step forward for Fidamc, which is expanding its field of action, hitherto associated with the aerospace sector, towards new strategic sectors such as shipbuilding, automotive and energy. The R&D centre thus reaffirms its commitment to innovation and technological development, promoting solutions that have a positive impact on multiple industries.
